San Antonio, Texas
Pastor John Gug, of the SION Romanian Baptist Church plant, felt God calling him to San Antonio Texas after pastoring 18 years in Sacramento, California.
Leaving behind success in Sacramento, he stepped into the unknown with no financial aid, no salary, no medical insurance and no financial support. John, his family, and four other dedicated and inspired families trusted solely on God’s help. “I never knew I would have to pay a price for this ministry,” but immediately after arriving to their new field of mission, Pastor Gug’s wife became seriously ill. Within five days, after a bleak prognosis, God performed a miracle!
Hebrews 12:2, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus…, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame…”
“I understood clearly that here it is talking about the Church, and choosing to follow the model of Jesus Christ when you want to start a new ministry, you have to pay the price. The price for us was great, but I consider that it is worth it.”
Philippians 1:6, “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”
The beginnings of this vibrant ministry in March of 2005 consisted of gathering in each others homes, and by June of that year they were meeting in their new church building.
“Many Romanians live in this city and we must find and reach them, and create a way for them to reach God through our church and ministry,” is how Pastor Gug describes the church’s vision and goal. And SION Romanian is doing just that. Children and youth ministries are a priority; and all the while they are continually preparing and raising up leaders to serve in this growing church. They have already outgrown their meeting room. Plans are already in the works to build.
A call from God, a passion to see the lost saved, and an energy to serve – this is what has made SION Romanian a place of dynamic possibilities turned into realities. Individuals are attending and hearts are being transformed. CEIF is privileged to help John make a difference in San Antonio, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds!
